I suggest you get more than 8 or more for design work, especially if you utilize more than one app at a time.

I use 2008 Mac Pro 3ghz with an SSD and dual 27" monitors and it runs all the CS apps perfectly. I recently bought my wife a 27" iMac, which is great for InDesign. In my experience, best rule of thumb is to get the most powerful computer you can afford. I use InDesign daily, for 8 hours or more, and I don't have any issues with frequent crashes. There must not be something right with your computer. Anandtech has several reviews of recent IPS displays that are matte.

Why not replace your HD with an SSD for speed, and install a fresh copy of 10.7 and CS6 on it? then add a matte display of your choice for your external screen. I have a mac mini server model, which is actually used as my network server as well, but its plenty zippy if I jump on it to work on something while my other machines are busy. The 4 i7 cores will help you more than the radeon graphics, InDesign doesn't have any GPU acceleration that I'm aware of, and really neither does PS or Premiere Pro or AE, they kind of claim to, but most of the grunt work is done by CPU still. You're right sorry, but I recommend get the quad core server with intel graphics for Adobe CS6 work. The quad-core is only available in the "server" model of the mini. I have a quadcore mac mini that I use as an additional box for PS, AE and FCP X for when my Mac Book Pro is busy and it's more than adequate.Įxcept for the fact that such a device doesn't exist. That thing will be just fine for indesign, in fact WAY more than just fine. There is nothing wrong with getting a quadcore i7 mac mini model with the radeon graphics, then max out it's RAM and get a fast SSD system disk. I'm mainly a OS X house so it would be a bit of a hassle to introduce a Windows machine. I assume to wait until the next iteration, since it's likely due for a refresh soon, and I can hold off a few months until I really need to start my InDesign projects.Īny recommendations? I'm not entirely opposed to switching to Windows for this specific machine if it's in my best interest.

Then again, I don't need a full size tower machine and like the small form factor of the Mini. I'm pretty much left with a Mac Mini as my only other option, but I feel "weird" using a laptop-based motherboard as my "desktop powerhouse" machine. IMacs could be an option if not for the glossy display.

I started looking at my options and realized I am severely limited, since my desire is to use a matte, non-glossy display (which I don't currently own, but also plan to buy). The problem is if CS5 didn't run on this computer, then CS6 likely won't run well either. I'm in a position where I will find a need to use InDesign on a regular basis, starting in the next few months.ĬS6 just came out and I'm thinking of buying it.

It's obviously a few years old but for everything I do on a regular basis, it's fine.Ībout 2 years ago, I installed Adobe InDesign on a trial basis, and it would frequently crash. My most "powerful" Mac is currently a 2.26 Core 2Duo MBP with 8GB of RAM.
